Simple Woman's Daybook

 FOR TODAY: March 5, 2013

Outside my window...it is snowing and blowing.  We have had more snow in the past two weeks than the rest of winter combined.  My youngest is loving every minute he can get outside to play in it.  We're not sure how the robins and geese feel.

I am thinking...about ways to address my children's hearts.  As a homeschool mom I've found it is easy to focus on academics and behavior, when godly character is the pressing need of a child's development.

I am thankful...for a dear friend who moved back into town after six years of living out of state.  What a joy to reconnect with this sister in Christ, and in front of the gluten free section of the grocery store to boot!

In the kitchen...the piano that sat in it for two days has been moved.  We can no longer tap out a tune while grabbing the mustard.

I am wearing...as much purple as possible.  For me, it's the new pink.

I am creating...a picture schedule for Josiah for his afternoons.  He loves to look at the next thing on his list and do it himself.  As I'm trying to work with the older two then, I love it as well.

I am going...on a field trip with Eric's sister's family next week.  When my 19-year-old niece asked if we wanted to be included in her spring break plans, we jumped at saying yes!  We are learning the gift of watching two of these children becoming young adults.

I am wondering...what God wants me to be when my children grow up.

I am reading...Smart but Scattered.  I'd never heard of executive functioning until the past couple of months, but have become better educated.  This book has so many great ideas for helping kids organize themselves and their responses.  Maybe it will help me organize myself, too!

I am hoping...we can understand and help Rachel with her digestive issues.  Prayer needed here.

I am looking forward to...starting a Bible study on Ecclesiastes.  We'll start next week, if it will stop snowing on Tuesdays.

I am learning...to stop focusing on what my children can't do and instead stand breathless at what God has done and is continuing to do in their lives.

Around the house...new carpet!  Josiah named it Fuzzy.  Thus the reason the piano was in the kitchen.

I am pondering...summer.  Our plans have never been so up in the air.  Wondering what God has in mind!

A favorite quote for today...

Never be sad or desponding,
If thou has faith to believe;
Grace, for the duties before thee,
Ask of thy God and receive.

Never give up, never give up,
Never give up to thy sorrows,
Jesus will bid them depart;
Trust in the Lord, Trust in the Lord,
Sing when your trials are greatest,
Trust in the Lord and take heart.

-Fanny Crosby

One of my favorite things...is teaching science to my kindergartner.  He thinks cells are oh so cool.  He is oh so right!  We are studying the human body.  I am marveling at what a young man told me recently who was homeschooled until high school: the body is the pinnacle of everything God made.  It is an awesome endeavor to study it, as it reveals God's creativity as nothing else in His creation.  What a thought!  And we can't even begin to talk about the study of the soul since that won't go under a microscope...

A few plans for the rest of the week: science classes at the Discovery Museum.  Rachel is giddy about the weather class as her current plan (aside from dog breeding and teaching) is to become a storm chaser.  Josiah is going to learn about magnets.

Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today: November 10, 2012
Outside my window...it was a rare, warm, beautiful November day, perfect for raking leaves, which we did at two separate homes today.  We have no trees in our yard.  Have rake, will travel!

I am thinking...that this friend has got it right.  And repenting of throwing up every fun curriculum tool I've found to use with my kids.  The precious moments together, as we learn more and more about God's amazing world, have been the most valuable part of this journey.

I am thankful...so thankful, to find that God truly can be trusted to give the equipping and emotions as He has called me to new ministry areas.

In the kitchen...after one year, gluten free is becoming our new normal.  There is no doubt this has been Josiah's best year yet, and my attempts to reintroduce gluten for myself over the past couple of weeks have meant digestive discomfort and eczema flare ups.  It is nowhere near as horrible as some may experience, but showing me it's well worth the trouble.  Today's new recipe was banana muffins, and Eric was the chef.  They tasted great.  Our biggest problem is that the kids eat faster than we can bake.

I am creating...shh...something that has to do with the book of Jeremiah.  Trusting that whatever happens with it, God will reveal His heart to me more fully and allow me to share His truth with others.

I am going...to hold on to God for dear life as we pray and follow His leading on high school decisions.  Everyone has their own opinions, and they are all very helpful, but it has shown us how necessary it will be to listen for His voice.

I am wondering...how to make gluten free hamburger buns.   This is reminding me of a recipe I need to look up.

I am reading...Spiritual Mothering by Susan Hunt.  It is a gem of a book.  That reminds me, I need to finish two more chapters by Monday night.

I am hoping...to see some very dear friends over Christmas break.  Whenever I see them, it's as if they still live just down the street.  Some friendships are like that. What a blessing.

I am looking forward to...a little boy's first birthday party with just friends.  And I love google.  There is no way I could come up with such fun ideas on my own.  His theme is airplanes.

I am learning...as I seek to discern God's will, what He is doing often has far more to do with what is in my heart than the choice between one decision or another.  When I sense He may be uprooting idols, dealing with sin, or reshuffling priorities, I aim for the hard choice and trust He will do what He will do.

Around the house...we sometimes find that replacing light bulbs can become a full time job.

A favorite quote for today..."I am the Lord's servant.  May it be to me as you have said."  Luke 1:38  This verse spoke to me years ago, and I continue to cling to it.

One of my favorite things...is homemade chili in the crockpot for supper, and the hug from Josiah for making his own special batch, which he ate with much relish.  Hooray for stage 2, even if a little goes a long way!

I am pondering...how to shave some money off our grocery bill.  That may make some other entries make more sense.  Or cents.

A few plans for the rest of the week: come up with a gluten free birthday cake recipe, rather than spend $6.50 on a mix, so that my son can have a rocket ship cake.  Then figure out how to decorate it with natural food coloring and candy that he can actually eat.  It's a tall order, but he will be thrilled no matter what.  You gotta love kids.

Cousins, sharing a love of dinosaurs at the science center!

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY: September 14, 2012

Outside my window...the grass is green again and small children are playing.  Our family seems to grow every day once school is done and the neighbor kids come over.  The swingset is quite a magnet, but that means I can see and hear most of what they are doing.  There are some wonderful friendships blossoming!

I am thinking...how funny it is that I have one child who insists she will never marry and another who walks around talking like this:

"When I grow up, I'm going to marry a woman who loves God.  I can't wait to be a dad."

How can two polar opposites be in the same family??

I am thankful...that a friend who teaches at our local high school has shared that the students are doing very well this week.  Our community is amazing in the way they have shown support, and many of these kids will be closer to each other and their teachers because of what they have been through.

In the kitchen...experiments resume as I learn to cook without sugar or chocolate.  This time I'm the one with the food sensitivities, which recently became much more obvious after going gluten free for the summer.  A recent trip to the doctor was confirming when I heard, "Well, I think it sounds like you are gluten intolerant..."  Someone reminded me of this great website to check out!  My grocery cart looks so different than it did two years ago when this journey started.  We eat more whole foods all the time, and keep feeling better and better when we do.

I am wearing...jeans and enjoying the cool breeze coming in the windows.  Summer is losing its tight hold on us, and we are so glad to see it go this year.

I am creating...a homemade gluten free pizza for supper.  There is really nothing better than the Italian sausage from our health food store as a topping.  Even while trying to cut our grocery bill down, that splurge will remain.

I am going...with my family to Springfield next weekend to sit at a table to pass out Feingold information to interested people at an early childhood conference.  This diet has helped not just Josiah but our whole family so much, and it will be a joy to give back some of my time to share that with others.  Of course, we have to stay and visit the Lincoln Museum while we're there, and I've found a Chipotle where we can eat!

I am wondering...why so many people seem to worry about socialization when it comes to homeschooling kids.  The mom's socialization is the one we should be worried about.  Time to call a friend!

I am reading...Old Yeller.  I've avoided it for years since I knew it had a sad ending, but Rachel will be reading it later this year so it's finally time to face it.  I'm thinking it might be a good one for us to read together, even though it's not an official read aloud.

I am hoping...that the making much of Leah I have sensed lately can be transformed into making much of God.

I am looking forward to...delving into our new grammar program, starting next week.  Hopes are high, but time will tell.  I know it's weird, but I really do love grammar.  Yes, the kids think I am weird, too.

I am learning... to trust that the place God has me right now is His best for me.  Last year I ached every day for the things I gave up to homeschool the kids.  That's not to say I don't love every minute of teaching them!  This year I am seeing more of what God may have in mind for these years, and am finding peace in His sovereign purposes.  These years with my kids are fleeting and I don't know how long this season of life will last.  One day I will ache for these moments, so my aim is to enjoy them and give them up to the Lord as a sweet offering as I serve Him in this task.

Around the house...Eric has been hard at work, replacing an outdated and too-often running toilet, our bathroom medicine cabinet, blinds, and other tasks.  The bigger project, a new kitchen floor, awaits our attention.  We're waiting while we watch our savings grow for that one.

I am pondering...that as much we may fear for our children's outward safety, their greatest danger could be the deception of their own heart.

A favorite quote for today..."One thing I ask of hte Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple...My heart says of you, 'Seek his face!'  Your face, Lord, I will seek." (Ps. 28:4, 8)

One of my favorite things...is opening up my Bible and digging into a book with a notebook in one hand and a commentary in the other.  Well, that might take more hands than I have, but spending time with the Lord like that is simply the best!  That's not to say it is always easy.  There is a reason why Hebrews refers to God's word as being "sharper than any double edged sword...judging the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

A few plans for the rest of the week: Josiah's soccer game and celebrating my great grandma's 100th birthday tomorrow.

From the learning rooms: It has been amazing to watch my kindergartner grow into what is expected of him this fall. The things I feared in homeschooling him have just not come to pass.

Yet for all my enthusiasm and joy, there are hard days, too.  Sometimes I wonder how to really reach into the areas of struggle for one of my children in a way that will make a difference.  It reminds me that joy or pain, I am not in this journey alone and I need to prayerfully depend on the wisdom of One who knows much more than I do about how He has wired each of my children.

Simple Woman's Daybook

For today, June 3, 2012

Outside my window...it is a perfect Goldilocks day: not too hot, not too cold, but just right.  There are 2 children here asking to take a long bike ride before the day is done.  Since the youngest, who can handle short rides with his training wheels, is currently at Grandma and Grandpa's house, it is a good time to say yes to this request!

I am thankful...for friends I have never met.  Funny how things like diet changes can bring people together who don't even live near each other.

In the kitchen...we are still finishing up the leftovers from our cultural night on Friday.  If you are looking for something a little different, we really liked this cashew curry recipe which we tried for the first time.  The Austrialian and Iceberg cookies are mostly gone, all the Korean food vanished, and we will be eating leftover samosas for days--we ordered just a few too many, but we are not going to complain since they are a favorite.  In the meantime, I am looking forward to a trip to the library tomorrow to check out some gluten free and Asian cookbooks.  Sometimes, those things can be one and the same, minus the samosas.

I am wearing...yellow.  I think it is the color of joy, and therefore this is my favorite shirt.

I am creating...a plan for the next school year.  It has been fun to piece it together.  Rachel is going to do Sonlight's Core D+E because there were just too many good books to skip it before moving on.  The extra time she will have with a little lighter reading will allow us more time to spend on some other areas.  Micah is going to study World History Part 2, Core H, since he had ancient history in sixth grade.  Josiah starts kindergarten in Core A.  He is most interested in doing science experiments.  It looks to be a busy year! Meanwhile, I can tell they need a bit of a break this summer, and the teacher is ready for one, too.  We do have a few things to work on every day, and I know they will read!

I am wondering...what prompted one of Micah's former classmates to call him up and come over today after not seeing him for a year.  It is good to hear the basketball bouncing and other teenage boy sounds coming in through the screen door.  And it reminds me to be praying to be a family of godly influence as my children come into contact with people from all walks of life.

I am reading...several things at once, as usual.  At the top of my list are the books Invitation to Solitude and Silence by Ruth Haley Barton and Abide in Christ by Andrew Murray.  This summer my goal is to learn anew how to sit at Jesus' feet and adore Him, finding in His person the power to live each day wholly for Him.  While I can't endorse everything in Barton's book, I do find it quite helpful.  Her analogy of allowing a jar of muddy water to settle so that the dirt eventually rests on the bottom and the pure water rises to the top is so helpful when it comes to slowing down and giving the Lord time to speak to us about the perplexities of life.

I am hoping...to spend less time in front of the computer and more time engaging fully in the moment as I serve and live with my family this summer.

I am looking forward to...seeing my little boy when he comes home tomorrow!!!

I am learning...to let go of my agenda and embrace God's.  When I do that, His plans become mine, and they are better than anything I could have ever thought up myself.

Around the house...we made it through a garage sale, packed up our school notebooks and binders for the year, and are getting ready for a used curriculum sale in a few weeks.  This week my goal is to clean out our desks.  The clutter is disappearing.  Then on to some painting!  Is there ever an end to painting when you have children at home?

I am pondering...the reality of college.  Somehow, something that was once a nebulous idea is becoming a bit more tangible.  Micah received his first college pamphlet in the mail this week.  It does seem early, but yes, he sent for it because he wanted to know more.  What does God have in store for his future?  It is five years away, but will be here in a blink.  It makes me want to savor every moment even more.  This is another reason next year will be a precious time for our family.  Once he hits high school...

A favorite quote for today..."Because we do not rest we lose our way...Poisoned by the hypnotic belief that good things come only through unceasing determination and tireless effort, we can never truly rest.  And for want of rest our lives are in danger."  Wayne Muller

One of my favorite things...is leading women in the study of God's word.  I love learning more as they share the insights God has given them.

A few plans for the rest of the week: This will be our quietest week this summer.  Besides an eye appointment and music lessons, the only thing that starts this week is Bible study.

A peek into my day... when I leave my camera unattended, I come back to find pictures like this on it.

I am taking part in The Simple Woman's Daybook.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY: March 19, 2012

Outside my window...green!!  Daffodils are blooming, the trees are budding out and flowering.  This usually happens around my birthday, a month from now.  It's beautiful, even if I worry a bit about a return to colder temperatures and that that will mean for things so anxious to start growing now.

I am thinking...about a friend whose husband is dying of pancreatic cancer, and the joyful witness they have been through it all.

I am thankful...for my husband's good health and good news from his recent health scare.  It could have all come out so differently, but we certainly understand how blessed we are in a way we didn't know before.

In the kitchen...we had to replace our 3 year old dishwasher.  The kids loved our week of washing dishes, and one was even rather sad to see it come to an end.

I am wearing...shorts, on March 19th?

I am creating...a wish list for homeschooling next year, and hoping for some finds at the used curriculum sale.
I am going...to make gluten free sugar cookies tonight!

I am wondering...how to cook gluten free yet not be so tired of meat.

I am reading...a lot of Dave Ramsey lately.  And wishing we were 15 years younger.

I am hoping...to break some bad sinful habits, knowing the resources of heaven are available in Christ for the sanctified life.

I am looking forward to...seeing the new Sonlight catalog!!

I am learning...to stop and talk to the Lord before rushing into things.  It is good to ask for Him to make things clear or to give direction, and He does, even if it's not always in my time.

Around the house...there comes a time when a new kitchen floor is less a luxury and more a necessity.  We're getting close to that, but by whose standards, really?

I am pondering...how it could be possible that my youngest child has a wiggly tooth.  Just slightly, mind you, but there it is.

A favorite quote for today...learned at BSF last week.  Too often it is not true of me though I greatly want it to be:

"This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.

I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no 'brief candle' for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."

-George Bernard Shaw

One of my favorite things...is doing read alouds on our front porch.

A few plans for the rest of the week: our last Bible study for church on Thursday, and then supper with my family this weekend when my youngest brother's family comes to visit!

A peek into my day...
Finding the favorite parts of the book about evolution versus creation that we studied earlier this year,
and growing bacteria on the kitchen counter; hoping there is no hidden meaning in this.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY, February 3, 2012

Outside my window...it is 52 degrees again!!  I am excited to think about spring but we've barely had winter.  The kids are out on the swing set with no coats.  Yesterday we just laughed at the groundhog's prediction of a longer winter.

I am thinking...a lot more about the persecuted church these days.  Our study of the Eastern Hemisphere has transported us to places and people that we barely knew existed knew a few months ago.  For our study of Vietnam, we watched a video produced by Voice of the Martyrs about 8 teens who visited the underground church there.  It is riveting, and has me thinking about our brothers and sisters in hostile nations more than ever.  And I've finally reached the point I can read their newsletters--it was so disturbing to me at one time I could barely bring myself to open the envelopes.  Now I can't wait to hear the latest stories; what an encouragement they are to my faith.

I am thankful...for a country where we are free to worship without fear of harassment by authorities.

In the kitchen...we tried the gluten free experiment and made it a whole 2 weeks!!  (I know that a real test should take 3-6 months, but at least this was a start.)  The outcome: I found that my heartburn was virtually gone.  Eric felt a little more tired and felt like he had some brain fog after eating it again.  However, work has been stressful for him so he's not sure if it wasn't just the way life is right now.  The biggest help to me was the intensive training on cooking and buying food for Josiah.  I think we will continue to avoid gluten much of the time--it makes cooking for Josiah easier.  However, we're not completely cutting it out if that's not necessary for the rest of us.

I am wearing...slippers with non-slip soles.  About this time last year I broke my thumb while slipping my way down the stairs.  I thought that perhaps spending a little more for these was better than the money we had to spend on X-rays and physical therapy.

I am creating...not much at the moment.  Our good health broke this week and I've spent most of it trying to quit coughing.  Not much energy left for other things!

I am reading...more Sonlight books!  Last night I finished Ali and the Golden Eagle.  It was a magnificent book in many ways, but thought provoking to think about how western culture is arriving at the doorstep of people who have done things the same way for centuries and are quite content with their way of life.  What does materialism do to cultures like that?  What has it done to us, for that matter?

I am hoping...that the changes I've seen in my eldest son are going to stick and keep coming.  It's quite an adventure of grace watching him grow into a young man.

I am looking forward to...March and empty weekends.  To fill them up, of course.

I am learning...to listen for the still small voice of God even in the midst of busyness.  Genesis says Enoch walked with God after he had many children, so it must be possible!!  It helps when I am immersed in His word and pondering what it means, looking for ways to put it into practice in daily living.  Sometimes it thunders the loudest at night when all other voices have gone to sleep.  "I will praise the Lord who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me." (Ps. 16:7)

Around the house...there are places where I'm trying to remember what the floor looks like.  I find it to vacuum, only to have it disappear again.  Am I the only person with this problem?

From the learning rooms...what really thrills me in homeschooling my children this year is when I give them an assignment and then see them do above and beyond what I have asked because they are so interested in the subject matter.  We are at a time in the year where I am seeing many improvements, and it is so very rewarding.

I am pondering...a summer ministry opportunity for my oldest.  He is ready to give his summer to serving the Lord, and I'm feeling the pull of a little boy suddenly growing up, knowing this is just the beginning.  But would I really rather he stay home and play Wii all summer, or do something that has eternal significance?

A favorite quote for today..."For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power."  (1 Corinthians 4:20)  It's one thing to say I believe certain things, another to really live by them.

One of my favorite things...is my almost 15 year old cat.  She is such a sweet little creature, ready with a purr whenever I stop long enough to pet her.  She spends most of her days camped out on our bed, and she seems to be enjoying her golden years.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  a tumbling class for Josiah and cheerleading for Rachel, followed the next day by a birthday party for 2 nieces.  I really should be grading papers right now.

A peek into my day...my kids have taken to building tents for the dog, who doesn't seem to mind.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY, January 3, 2012

Outside my window...there is a dusting of snow on the ground, enough to make small children want to venture outside but not enough to make grown men shovel.  Has winter finally arrived?  Perhaps, but it is supposed to be 50 by the weekend.

I am thinking...it is both good to have a break from a routine and good to go back to one.

I am thankful...for the safe arrival of a precious little niece, for a blessed Christmas with family, for good health, and that God is my sure anchor even when things may not always be so good.  Seeing others suffer loss reminds me of what is truly important and lasting about this life.

In the kitchen...I can't seem to break away from gluten with the season of birthdays still upon us, and good things to eat still in the freezer.  Can I make February my new start date?  There is only a little sugar left in the cupboards now after Christmas and a birthday, and I count that as a very good thing.  The latest hit for Josiah is a paleo bread made from ground up pecans as a flour base.  It is amazing to me what he will eat these days!

I am wearing...something warm.  Clothes are mostly utilitarian here.

I am creating...ideas for the next school year in my head.  My mind changes often so it's good there is nothing yet set in stone and many months before firm decisions must be made.

I am reading...The Story of the World: Ancient Times and enjoying the glimpse of Biblical history interspersed with tidbits about the Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Indians, Chinese, and Phoenicians.  I may have to find the adult version of this book someday.  I just finished Around the World in 80 Days (fun!) and am now plodding through Les Miserables.  Since it was ordered to my our new Kindle, I had no idea it was over 1000 pages and now know I have bit off a bit more than I can chew.  No stopping now, and can I just say that a built in dictionary is THE reason to splurge for a Kindle?  (That reason comes just before the free books, of course!)

I am hoping...that Josiah can get through this year without falling too many more times.  (Stitches, a bloody lip, and a nasty bump on the head are his trophies from the past 2 months alone.)

I am looking forward to...planning a trip out west this summer, Lord willing.

I am learning...to meal plan without much bread.  Think potatoes and salad.

Around the house...there is not much going on beyond Christmas cleanup but that is a very, very good feeling.

From the learning rooms...we are looking forward to some new things for this semester.  Math for Josiah, more fraction practice for Rachel, and current events via a great deal I was given on God's World News.

I am pondering...why I can get so darn excited about earthly things while too often neglecting the unseen spiritual realities?  It may be a matter of how I am spending my time and energy.  At least possibly.

A favorite quote for today..."Let us never fear robbers nor murderers.  Those are dangers from without, petty dangers.  Let us fear ourselves, prejudices are the real robbers; vices are the real murderers.  The great dangers lie within ourselves.  What matters it what threatens our head or our purse!  Let us think only of that which threatens our soul."  (Les Mis)

One of my favorite things...is being curled up in front of the fire with a good book.  Now to acquire some wood to enjoy such a thing...

A few plans for the rest of the week: my daughter has arranged a roller skating outing with a new friend.  This should be as interesting as ice skating was a few weeks ago!

A peek into my day...or at least one that we had here recently...

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY: December 2, 2011

Outside my window...the grass is still green.  This has been the warmest fall in recent memory, with truly cold days just now arriving.

I am thinking...pondering, meditating on what it is to have Jesus as my great high priest, and how his priesthood is superior to the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament.  Hebrews is a great book!

I am thankful...so very thankful, that we have finally tracked down Micah's MSG sensitivity.  Now we've seen it cause allergy flare-ups, and all the pieces of the puzzle of the past few years are falling into place.

From the learning rooms...we just finished our study of China and are moving on to Mongolia.  In science Rachel has been learning the parts of a seed and Micah has been studying scientific theory.  We have started All About Spelling for the two younger kids.  After talking with a sister-in-law, I decided it was worth it to take Rachel back to the beginning and cover all the bases.  Everyone loves preschool art on Fridays...including the 7th grader.  Next week we will start reading The True Saint Nicholas by William Bennett.

In the kitchen...I am staring down a Paleo cookbook, daring myself to try this for the new year.  It seems like a good fit: gluten free, dairy free, low in carbs and sugar, packed with nutrient-rich foods...with all our eating issues, this might just be a way we can all eat alike and be happy.  (And maybe even healthy!)  So long as I can add in a little So Delicious chocolate milk and a coconut cupcake from time to time, I think I could do it.  Pass me an avocado, will you?  And then teach me what to do with it.

I am wearing...a Christmas sweater I donned on this morning in an effort to be festive for the Nutcracker.  Sitting next to a 5-year-old during the ballet meant a barrage of questions.  "Is that Clara?  Is she having a dream?  Is this still a dream?  Is that the Nutcracker?"  And then at the entrance of the Snow Queen: "Is she good?  Is she on Clara's team?"

I am creating...it is December.  We must keep secrets.

I am going...to have to split Micah and Rachel up for school next year, I think.  We are loving this year, but they have different needs beyond this Core, and an extremely wide range between their reading levels.  I can't seem to get my nose out of my Sonlight catalog or away from the Simply Charlotte Mason website.  Delightful Reading seems to be tailor-made for Josiah, although for now Phonics Pathways is fantastic.  Ok, I could dwell on homeschooling but we must move on...

I am wondering...why I can post success with no dairy one day and wonder what I am doing wrong the next.  It is one reason why gluten free seems less like a foe to fear and more like a friend to embrace.  This journey of diet can be a roller coaster sometimes.

I am reading...Around the World in Eighty Days.  It is so much fun to read the books my kids will be reading and enjoy great literature I missed as a child.  I am so grateful to this day for the band teacher who introduced me to A Little Princess and Anne of Green Gables.  I already loved to read; those books took a to a new level I will never get over.

I am hoping...there will be enough time in December to do everything on my to do list.  The most important things are the ones that matter anyway, and I trust they will get done.

I am looking forward to...a new little niece or nephew in the next few weeks.  Can't wait!

I am hearing...a snake hissing in the background.  Why a snake, I am not sure, but it one way to use your imagination when you're five.

Around the house...we tore the outside plastic off our first story windows after the smell meant a daily headache for me.  I'd rather be cold.

I am pondering...how to spend less time on the computer these days.  Since when did it become essential for daily living?  If you see me here less, you'll know why.

One of my favorite things...is having our school principal join us for a field trip and getting to hold his hand.

A few plans for the rest of the week: A Santa visit in the morning with the youngest.  Christmas shopping with my sweetheart later in the day.  When is the last time we did that together??  And a homeschool band concert next week.  The kids have been working hard.

Here is picture I am sharing...of Eric helping Josiah with basketball skills just before Thanksgiving break.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY, October 18, 2011

Outside my window...the sky and trees are competing for the mood.  The gray skies say cold and sad but the changing colors add warmth and beauty.  Today, I think the leaves win.

I am thinking...about how God is using the events of my life and the lives of those around me for the progress of the gospel in the midst of the larger story He is writing.  So often I reduce my circumstances to a puzzle that needs to be solved instead of a walk of obedience in response to God's word.  It is good to be reminded often of His sovereignty, trustworthiness, and bigger plan.

I am thankful...for difficulties that shave off the rough spots and make more more like Christ.  Looks like I can expect more, because there's a lot of work to be done here!

From the learning rooms...we've been taking a few mini-field trips while the warm weather lasts.  Our zoo pass expires at the end of the month, so I'm looking for a warmish day to go.  We are thoroughly enjoying Sonlight's Core F.  I'm not sure how it compares to their other cores, but I think we are hooked!  Feathered dinosaurs have been our science pursuit this week.  Micah loved it so much, he finished a week's worth of lessons in one day.

In the kitchen...'tis the season for pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread, and pumkin pancakes.  My husband couldn't be happier!

I am wearing...a mulberry sweater and jeans.  Cozy and comfortable, which is my idea of fashion.  (Mulberry helps!)

I am wondering...if Micah will get out of braces before his sister needs them as well?  It's looking a bit doubtful.

I am reading...When My Name Was Keoko by Linda Sue Park.  Homeschooling the kids has reignited my own wonder for learning. This book gives a fascinating and sobering background to a darker time in Korean history, a "forgotten decade" when Japan had control of the country and ruled with oppression until the end of World War II.  Studying the Eastern Hemisphere is filling in the gaps in my own education.  I remember we talked a lot about Hitler and his rise to power, by why not Japan?

I am looking forward to...our church's mission conference.  It is exciting to see God's hand at work around the world, and this is only one glimpse!!

I am hearing...Micah practicing trumpet, making it sound as ugly as possible.  It makes the dog bark, which seems to be the point.

Around the house...Eric brought home flowers on Friday night and it was Saturday morning before I noticed them.  I'll leave it to your imagination what that means.

I am pondering...the ugliness of my own pride and the incredible humility of the Savior.  It seems that gazing on Him is my only antidote.

One of my favorite things...is walking through crisp, fallen leaves with a small hand in mine.

A few plans for the rest of the week: The kids are trying out a homeschooling swim and gym class.  We were so excited to find a vending machine where all three kids can find treats.  They have Late July cheese crackers!!  Really, sometimes it is the little things around here, especially when it comes to food.

Here is picture I am sharing of a friend we loved so much, we set him free...

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...there is a hint of fall in the air most days.  The garden is neglected and dying but still forgiving in producing tomatoes and peppers.  Today I picked most of the carrots.  They were either huge or tiny.  I have a lot to learn about gardening.

I am thinking...that the scope of human suffering since creation is greater than I ever imagined.  There are so many people without hope in this world.  Why should I be numbered among those who have it?

I am thankful...for our new neighbors.  They are a homeschooling family with 4 kids.  Who but God can think up things like this?

From the learning rooms...we are leaving Australia soon for New Zealand.  This week we added dress ups to our writing.  Suddenly and amazingly, the kids thought up a myriad of -ly words and soon were calling me "Mommily."  Even Josiah did it, though he hadn't a clue why.  We abandoned vocabulary workbooks in favor of vocabulary notebooks.  The kids are required to find at least 5 words a day in their reading and then define the words using a dictionary, then choose a special few to use in a sentence.  Micah prefers using the book version of a dictionary; Rachel likes to use the one online.  I'm praying the one who struggles with vocabulary is learning, and already see progress.  Clarinet has been a great switch for Rachel.  She sounds better every day.

In the kitchen...as many recipes as I post here, I still feel like I should be cooking more.  I'm finding inspiration in scouring cookbooks for ethnic food, so that's a start.  Josiah is perpetually hungry so we are using his Judy clock to show him the next time he will be eating.  It has helped immensely.

I am going...to have to find some way to keep my kids clothed during growth spurts.

I am wondering...how making such a small commitment to read the Bible together as a family could be such a blessing?  This morning Josiah sat and "read" his little picture Bible by himself because he knows his brother and sister read theirs first thing in the morning, too.

I am reading...about the Mongols and Genghis Khan.  And finding out how very ignorant I am of the world I live in.  It's humbling.

I am hoping...to grow in humility and not get proud about it.

I am looking forward to...a field trip to Shedd Aquarium very soon.  The last time we were there, Rachel was still a baby.

Around the house...we are working on replacing broken blinds and outdated curtains.  A little at a time so it doesn't add up all at once.

One of my favorite things...is hearing my kids giggle together.

A few plans for the rest of the week: the first Awana for my youngest son.  I wasn't going to sign him up but was swayed by the enthusiasm of a friend.  And I'm so glad...he already loves learning the verses!

Here is a picture I am sharing of my oldest son being baptized.  He has waited a long time for this day and his face was radiant with joy.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...Rachel and Josiah have the hose and are not dry.  Any guesses as to who is wetter?  Micah is at Great America today, and I am guessing he is the wettest of the three right about now.

I am thinking...how nice it would be to have a nap and a personal chef.

I am thankful...for the friend who is painting our house.  The flat paint we used when we moved in is being covered with a more kid-friendly semi-gloss.  This was an overwhelming task to consider, and in two days she's tackled a good chunk and wants to come back to do more.

From the learning rooms...Rachel is planning a luau and learning to dance the hula without giggling.  Micah is educating all of us regarding WWII battles fought in the Pacific.  After reading a book on the battle of Iwo Jima, I've learned that he does indeed take accurate notes in his head.  Josiah says his favorite thing about school is "learning" and Explode the Code, but I'm happiest that he is finally learning how to color.

In the kitchen...I need to do some baking.  (See "I am thinking" above.)  I have a free afternoon and should be using it to do that.  See "I am thinking" about nap above.

I am going...to check on the kids outside.  Just for the record, they are both mighty wet.

I am wondering...how Rachel will like the clarinet.  She was doing fine with violin but not. enjoying it. at all.  I was going to make her stick it out for a year until I added up the costs and realized how much we were spending on something she doesn't like.  Now the kids can both be in band together.

I am reading...and studying...the book of Ezekiel.  This much-neglected book is a treasure of word pictures that has made this time of Israel's history come alive.  I have been shocked at seeing the idolatry in the temple, grieved at God's glory departing, and learned how lewd the people of Jerusalem really were.  Here is the ugliness and hopelessness of sin completely uncovered.  Our question should not be why a good God would allow bad things to happen to His people, but how a holy God can do anything but condemn sin.*  The mercy of God shown to us in Christ is a bright and shining contrast.  How precious is our Savior!

I am hoping...to join other women in posting our thoughts as we participate in the e-100 Bible reading program.  This starts at our church on Aug. 22.  Watch for updates.

I am looking forward to...our trip to Turkey Run, Indiana, in a few weeks.  We've never been.

Around the house...we are putting up new blinds and curtains in the newly painted living room.  It looks like a different room and we didn't even change the paint color.  Now the family room is all torn up.

One of my favorite things...about August is tomatoes and sweet corn.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Our first full day of school was yesterday, with two more to come.  Hiking with the Rhodes at Matthieson State Park on Sat.  We need rain, but hope it holds off until we're done.  My husband is itching to get sweet corn to freeze.  It's a big job.  Insert something here about personal chef.

Here is a picture I am sharing from our morning Bible lesson...it seems one student is fairly inattentive and awfully furry.

*From the NIV Application Commentary.  Thanks to my brother for this recommendation.  It's a great resource!

Simple Woman's Daybook

For today, July 1, 2011...

Outside My Window...the wind is blowing strong, but will not be much help in today's heat wave.  Welcome to July!!

I am thinking...about a comment a friend made earlier this week.  She said the depth of our first conversation with a new friend sets the tone for the depth of future conversations.  How true this is!  If I'm content to only talk about the weather, we never seem to get very deep.

I am thankful for...a summer of refreshment, the first in a very long time.  My youngest is no longer waking up with the roosters, and I have extended time to spend in God's word.  A lighter-than-usual summer schedule has lent itself to less running and more time to read, be spontaneous with the kids, see them find creative ways to fill down time, cook, weed the garden, and more.

From the learning rooms...Rachel is studying 7 multiplication facts at a time, 5 times a day until they are mastered.  It's working!  Music is filling our home with trumpet, piano, and violin lessons.  It's amazing how quickly they are improving with lessons every week.  Josiah has developed a love for Cuisenaire rods and Wedgits.

From the kitchen...I am trying to find ways to use our fresh parsley.  Watch for a favorite recipe soon!  I am also trying to stop using chocolate, switch from canola to coconut and grapeseed oil, and cut down on sugar.  One child is insisting on eating baked potatoes for breakfast.  She's never liked cereal much, but now I agree.  It's not the best start for the day.

I am wearing...a sleeveless top, to celebrate the heat wave.

I am creating...lesson plans for fall, in pencil.  Just something to start with and see how it goes.

I am going...to pick up Micah from church camp tonight!!

I am reading...Life Skills for Kids.  Instructors' guides.  Parts of Living By the Book for Bible study.  The Care and Keeping of You and Anne of Green Gables to Rachel (a shortened version).  Rapunzel to Josiah, repeatedly, after watching the movie Tangled.  Torches of Joy, a book from Core F for fall.

I am hoping...in God and His promises, encouraged greatly by the life of Abraham.  I'm also hoping that in two more weeks, I will lose my thumb splint!

I am hearing...the pitter pat of 4-year-old feet on the kitchen floor.  My youngest is the only one home this morning.

Around the house...we'd like to paint Rachel's room.  I'm glad we've put it off, though, as she changed her mind about the color.  We really need to paint a lot of rooms, but hers will be a good one to check off the list next.  Never mind that it was just painted last summer.  I'm not overly fond of gray, either.

One of my favorite things...time for Josiah to chime in.  Every day since he was two years old, he has thanked God for fireworks and Fourth of July in his prayers.  Here they come again!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:  Plans?  For once, I have very few.

Here are two pictures I am sharing...

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...it is a lovely day.  What am I doing in front of the computer?  Josiah and I will head to the park later this afternoon.  Eric is at Starved Rock with our church's college class.  What a perfect day for hiking there!

I am thinking...that a week without my oldest two children is plenty long enough!  The house is quieter, things stay cleaner, there is less laundry, and I'm ready for all of that that to change.  They come home on Monday after lunch!

I am thankful for...the little things, like the youngest being able to dress himself and how the older two are now folding their own clothes.  Rachel was even caught turning her clothing right side out before the last washing.  That never happened when Mom was the one doing the folding.

From the learning rooms...we have 4 more days of preschool before we take a break for the summer.  How much of a break, I'm not sure, as school activities are one of Josiah's favorite things to do when he's otherwise bored.  We have plenty we can pull out and work on, but the pool beckons us as well.

From the kitchen...I've mostly avoided this room over the past week.  Kids are coming home, so I'd better get reacquainted with what needs to be done.  We are going to try some different lunch ideas this summer to avoid the constant sandwich rut.  Baked potatoes, black bean nachos, maybe even some tuna/egg/chicken salad recipes.  I'm not expecting the last offerings to be well-received, so stay tuned.

I am wearing...the same top I wore to church, paired with jeans.  It was easier than changing the whole outfit.

I am creating...a wishlist on 2 websites full of items I want to buy for homeschooling.  After the used book sale this weekend, I hope to place my order.  That's a bit scary, because it means I will have to stop changing my mind about math.

I am going...to physical therapy once a week for now.  I broke my thumb when I fell down the steps in March, and finally had it X-rayed last week.  The goal is no pain by the end of summer.

I am reading...a couple of books from the Sonlight Core my children will be studying next year.  Commodore Perry and the Land of the Shogun was an eye-opener.  I've never known this piece of history, which makes me all the more thankful we will be studying the Eastern Hemisphere this year.  This mom has as much to learn as the kids.

I am hoping...to train Josiah to obey the first time he's asked.

I am hearing...such quiet.  I can even hear the birds sing, in between slurps of water by the 4-year-old.

Around the house...it's a little dusty, but cleaner than it has been in quite awhile.

One of my favorite things...is spending time with others.  I had no idea people were so fascinating in the days when I allowed shyness to rule my interactions.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Get ready for Thursday's Bible study.  Dust.  Cook some food.  Go to the library. Re-engage frenetic activity with two preteens home again.

Here is picture I am sharing from Rachel's luau the last week of school:

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...it is warm and sunny, but the threat of severe weather hangs over us.  My thoughts and prayers are with the people in Joplin, MO and the many other places where tornadoes have caused devastation this spring.

I am thinking...about having a blog just for Bible study inspiration.  It could mirror the study I lead this summer and then be a place to put the studies I've written.  It's better than the filing cabinet they are in now...at least someone could use them.  Thoughts?

I am thankful for...the daily reminder from God's word that I may be a pauper but am rich in Christ.

From the learning rooms...we are on day four of creation and learning about the universe.  This morning we watched clips of the first landing on the moon.  The preschooler was enthralled and I was trying to imagine what that day must have felt like to those watching.

From the kitchen...we are trying to learn to like green tea.  Some claim it helps with cholesterol, triglycerides, focus, blood sugar control, and more.  What I wasn't expecting was Josiah clamoring to try it.  We found him some regular peppermint tea and he loves it.  Ok then.

I am wearing...paint clothes that didn't get splattered.  I wish the same were true of our bathroom floor.

I am going...to take my daughter to pick out a violin this week.  (We're renting.)  How fun is that?  Not sure where this journey will end up or whether it will last, but it's fun to be here to start it with her.

I am reading...According to Plan: The Unfolding Revelation of God in the Bible by Graeme Goldsworthy.  It is an introduction to Biblical theology, a Christmas present from a young man who will someday be a great pastor.  What I love: look for how all scripture points to Christ.  I'm only on chapter 5.

I am hoping...the homeschool band my son is joining will grow.  That I know a year from now what we are supposed to do next about school.

I am hearing...mostly silence and some birds.  Josiah is napping after being awakened an hour early by a crash of thunder.

Around the house...we have two purple rooms now.  I know it is pretty silly to be giddy over this but I am.

One of my favorite things...is school ending and summer beginning.  We have 5 days and an hour.

A few plans for the rest of the week: help my friend with a garage sale.  Life can go on when we're done!  And supper with a friend and her family who live far away but are close in heart.  I can't wait to see her.

Here is a picture I am sharing, because he overcame his fears and had a great time:

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...it is cloudy and way too cold for May.  We've gone from air conditioning to heat in a matter of days.  It can't last for long.

I am thinking...about how great it would be to have my brother and sister-in-law only 2 1/2 hours away instead of 13.  Pray, pray, pray.  It's not really about what I want, but about where God would want them to be.

I am thankful for...good friends.  My life is richer because of them.  I appreciate that my perspective is not the only one out there and that I am part of a larger community, especially the body of Christ.

From the learning rooms...we are finishing up the first half of a preschool curriculum.  Josiah's favorites are All About Spelling and reading time.  He does not understand why he should EVER have to color.

From the kitchen...we are finishing off the homemade cinnamon rolls.  When Rachel brought home her Mother's Day note to me, the first and last sentence read, "The most important thing about my mother is that she is a good baker."  Only by God's grace, because I have to now!!!  It helps that I know some really good cooks who share their recipes.

I am wearing...a long sleeved shirt and a fleece jacket.  I'm going to have to change soon for a graduation party.  My goal with clothes is usually comfort, not fashion.

I am creating...a space for homeschooling.  We had to empty a storage cabinet and move a desk.  A fresh coat of paint is coming next.  I think I've decided to stay with purple.

I am going...to stay home a lot more this week.  Time to tackle some projects that have been put off for too long.

I am reading...about 5 books at once.  This could be its own post!  Two are recommendations from friends: A Charlotte Mason Education by Catherine Levison and Children Who Do Too Little by Patricia Sprinkle.  I literally held one in each hand not knowing which to devour first.  Both are good and if you're nearby and want to borrow, I'll be done soon.  I'm also reading two books my brother gave me for my birthday: The Glory of Christ by John Owen and A Place for Weakness by Michael Horton.  I'm also plowing through Gospel-Powered Parenting by William Farley.  There is more theology in it than parenting tips--my kind of book indeed.

I am hoping...in the return of Christ.  After studying Isaiah, it's hard not to think about it more often and long for that day.

I am hearing...my son and husband playing the Wii game they got me for Mother's Day.

Around the house...things are looking much better than a week ago.  I love having kids who can clean bathrooms!

One of my favorite things...is quiet.  That's one good reason to get out of bed as early as I do.

Here is picture I am sharing...

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...it is warm and sunny, a picture perfect day.  There are not enough days like this, so they are a gift when they come.

I am thinking...about my last BSF leader's meeting tomorrow.  It is a bittersweet feeling to think about leaving the leadership of this ministry.  I'm richer than words can say to have spent eight years there.  God is good!

I am thankful for...another school year almost done.  It's been a long one with a lot of illness but we have learned to persevere.

From the kitchen...the cupboards are almost bare.  Time to grocery shop and bake some homemade snacks to get us through the week.

I am wearing...an orange Parkside cross country shirt.  I wasn't sure having a shirt that says, "Here's your target" on the back was good attire for a walk in the woods today, but at least it was orange.

I am creating...a plan for homeschooling in the fall.  It's coming together bit by bit.

I am going...to lead a Bible study this summer on how to have a quiet time with the Lord.  Ideas, ideas, ideas.  This has been life-changing for me and a tool I look forward to passing on to others.  I'm grateful for the woman who put it into my hands.

I am reading...The $5 Dinner Mom Breakfast and Lunch Cookbook.  The recipes look wonderful and I'm hoping it will help save some money so we can do music lessons for the kids this year.

I am hoping...to grow in self-discipline in the months to come.

I am hearing...my husband and kids wish my mother-in-law Happy Mother's Day.  I hope I'm next in line to talk!

Around the house...I just need some time to clean this week.  It's been too nice outside to be indoors cleaning, but it needs to be done eventually.

One of my favorite things...is being outdoors after a long winter.  Is there a theme here?

Here is picture I am sharing:
